FEATURED STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Jaskaran Singh for Anhad Magazine (Instagram: @_jk_photograhy)

When asked why Sikh literacy is important to him as a photojournalist in the midst of an ongoing cultural genocide, he states: the literature and history bestowed upon us by our Gurus and protectors of Sikhi is sacred to us. As a community, we will always find our history and religious order under attack, by internal and external forces who have ulterior motives. While it is a daily struggle to fight such forces, doing work that keeps truth afloat in such times, is of paramount importance. As cliché as it sounds, pictures do speak a thousand words, and using my art to speak that truth matters most to me. Where words can be twisted and misinterpreted, photos cannot; which makes my humble contribution to Sikh literacy as a documentarian of sorts, an important step in the right direction. Those in power and positions of governance will always have the resources to distort history and Sikh literature; my job is to simply bring people together under the umbrella of truth and fight the systemic machinery of propaganda.

When asked why he chose to contribute to Anhad and how the theme of TIME resonates with him, he describes: Photography to me is not simply just work to captures images; it is visual art that speaks of emotions, untold stories, and everything in between that sometimes words can’t describe. Interestingly, I’d like to believe that my work is timeless. Taking the revolution for example; the struggle to fight and take back what’s rightfully ours is a timeless, ongoing fight. Years after all of this is over, my work will serve as a commemoration and burning remembrance for the days that once transpired. It will keep us rooted, serve as a historically significant document for generations to come, and serve as a guidepost for those to choose to walk this path. That time and again, history repeats itself; time and again, people have to rise up to battle the odds is something we’re all aware of; my work shall simply substantiate and transcend the days of the present, into the future.
